If you’re experiencing anxiety, panic, or worries that won’t go away, Advanced Counseling Bozeman is here for you.

Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is often a pattern of unpleasant or intrusive thoughts, feelings, and external triggers that create uncomfortable and even extreme reactions. Usually, we try to manage those reactions by avoiding stressful situations — but avoidance can also reinforce our patterns of negative thinking, creating a continuous cycle.

Anxiety can be a symptom of having trouble adjusting to new life circumstances, social situations or everyday life. It can also be related to more continuous problems such as Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Symptoms vary widely, but often include:

  • Feeling on edge or restless

  • Sweating, trembling, blushing, or tingling

  • Difficulty controlling worries or fears

  • Sleep problems or insomnia

  • Irritability

  • A racing or pounding heart

  • Stomachaches, chest pain, or other unexplained discomfort

  • Feelings of being out of control, or of impending doom

  • Excessive worries about a specific object or situation, and taking active steps to avoid it

  • Trouble speaking up or participating

Anxiety is not your fault. It’s a common experience for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Both genetic and environmental factors can contribute to the risk of developing anxiety, including:

  • Shyness or nervousness in new situations in childhood

  • Experiences of stressful or negative events

  • Some physical conditions, like heart arrhythmia and/or thyroid issues

  • Use of caffeine and other substances or medications
