Understanding PTSD
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder can feel like it puts our life on hold. The first step to seeking help is an act of courage — but you can heal from this, and we are here to help.
After witnessing, hearing about, or experiencing an event that was or felt life-threatening, it’s natural to feel stressed, scared, on edge, or upset. If these symptoms continue, and create problems in our daily lives, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may be the cause.
PTSD is our body’s way of protecting us from past events that it perceives as present threats. When a traumatic experience gets “stuck” in the body and in the brain, triggers can bring on a fight, flight, freeze, and/or fawn response when we don’t need it, causing distressful symptoms.
PTSD symptoms can include:
Being startled or frightened easily
Being hypervigilant or on guard for potential danger
Actions or behaviors that may seem self-destructive or dangerous, such as drinking to excess or driving too fast
Difficulty sleeping, including nightmares
Trouble focusing, concentrating, or remembering things
Feeling irritable, angry, or aggressive
Feeling a strong sense of guilt or shame
Recurrent thoughts and distressing memories of the traumatic event
Hopelessness and depression
Emotional numbness or detachment
PTSD can be a difficult, isolating experience. It’s also common — and very treatable.
