Gestalt Therapy

One theory that is commonly used in psychotherapy is Gestalt Therapy. Gestalt therapy is the idea that things must be seen as a whole, not various parts. Therefore, considering a person in their environments is a part of seeing the person. The goal of of this type of therapy is promoting self awareness, personal responsibility, growth and freedom, and understanding ones feelings. This type of therapy is effective in bringing the client into the present and increasing awareness of what their physical body is telling them about their emotional being.

Gestalt therapy puts emphasis on perception. So it allows the client to bring their emotions and experiences into the room to help process. Some of the more common techniques used are role play, guided imagery, exaggeration of body language/bringing awareness to body language, and creative arts. These techniques often bring life to therapy where words could not.

Gestalt therapy is often used alongside other techniques and can be easily incorporated into other types of therapy. Bringing awareness to what is occuring in the present can open a window into what is happening internally and emotionally and can then be used as a guide to increase understanding of self. Once aware of the self, you can explore how this impacts your own reality and how your perceptions can be widened to better cope with the environment.
